Wales is rich with culture and history which is why I feel very fortunate to live here. For the Final Semester of my Masters Degree I wish to look deeper into the history behind some of these beautiful ruins that scatter the countryside. After my recent trip home I decided I really wanted to look in to the Welsh history of the area and in particular the connection with the Cistercian Monks.
Cistercian, byname White Monk, or Bernardine, member of a Roman Catholic monastic order that was founded in 1098 and named after the original establishment at Cîteaux (Latin: Cistercium), a locality in Burgundy, near Dijon. A small group travelled to West Wales to set up a religious house in the area.
I found my self really interested in the monks and the Abby’s and churches that connected with them. I found an abbey near aberystwyth was the heart of the Cistercian monks in wales, Strata Florida. I now have a big interest to visit and see what remains.
